Jazz on Church St

From our Church Street Emporium

This Sunday we are very pleased to present the first Jazz @ Church Street event, and are very fortunate to be able to showcase the trombone player Tom Dunnett and his trio.

Jazz is a musical tradition that developed in America & soon spread to the rest of the world through the 20th Century. It is the opinion of many academics and practitioners that it is the only musical form that can be attributed to the USA alone.

Some truly luminary artists and thinkers have risen to prominence through the jazz movement and over the coming months we plan to not only showcase the work of local musicians, but to also point you in the direction of landmark works that will guide our way through the journey that jazz has taken in the past century or so.

Tom Dunnett:

Tom is now in his 3rd year on the jazz course, studying trombone at the Birmingham Conservatoire. He’s had some great opportunities to make music since his move to Birmingham and has played in all sorts of groups from big band to quartet. This latest creation, a drum-less trio, features two friends from college. Doug Mcmillan is also in his 3rd year, studying jazz guitar and is a member of the latest winning band at the Cork “Jazz Futures” competition. Hamish Livingstone completed his bass studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire last year and now plays with a many ensembles around Birmingham. He was also a member of the winning band at Cork.

Further Gigs:

Hamish can be seen on the 25th at the Spotted Dog Pub in Digbeth with the Jim Wynn nonet playing the music of Miles Davis.
He can also be seen at the Old Joint Stock Pub on the 26th with the Gareth Fowler trio.

Tom can be seen on the 10th October at the Edgbaston Tap Pub with his quintet.

Cheers,

Si. (Flat White no Sugar)

October’s Live Music Friday!

From our Church Street Emporium

After a break of a month,Live music Fridays are back starting next week on Friday the 7th.

And we couldn’t be more excited. What better way to start off the weekend than with a Purity beer or one of our fantastic Cofftails listening to great local music in the glimmer of candle light.

Playing for us in October we will have two very special sets. Starting with Bradley Will Simpson, an up and coming 16 year old singer/songwriter. His influences range from The Kooks to Paulo Nutini and Jamiroquai to Foo Fighters, his set is an ear pleasing variety of his own material mixed with crowd pleasing covers. He has played many great venues around Birmingham including HMV Institute, 02 Academy and The Rainbow and supported a number of acts such as Kate McGill, Cosmo Jarvis and Mike Dignam.

Bradley will be followed by Birmingham based Avalande; the collaborative project of lyricist Rosie Wilkes and guitarist Anthony Williams who began writing together about a year ago. Creating imaginative songs with close harmonies and hazy lyrics, determined very much by their surroundings and encounters. Avalande’s songs lie somewhere between acoustic folk, rock and pop, inspired by names such as; Belle and Sebastian, Nick Drake, Massive Attack, PJ Harvey, Ryan Adams, The Smiths, and Tori Amos.

So hope to see you here on the 7th!

Fox Elipsus Live at Church St.

From our Church Street Emporium

If you’ve seen Fox Elipsus’ tour dates you’ll know what we mean when we say he is a busy man and somewhat of an institution in coffee shops and bars around the world.

Fox, who now lives in New York, was born in Oxford, is partly Persian, mostly English, and a little Irish too. He speaks a few languages and has been to a lot, and we mean a lot, of countries, with his aim to play a gig in every country in the world playing the music he makes.

Fox has just finished a huge tour of the USA and is starting a mammoth tour of Europe. He will be playing live at our Church St Emporium on Sunday the 25 of September (that’s right, this Sunday!) Like all his shows it’s FREE and all shows are family friendly, but also extremely comical and entertaining. Please invite all of your friends, and please don’t be shy because as he says “My only impression of your city is the reception you give me when I come and sing for you, so if you enjoy the show, please be loud and supportive! “I play every single show FOR FREE and all petrol money, food, and shelter is provided by my fans, through generosity, donations, and CD sales. I often go hungry and sometimes sleep in my car”.

Now we can’t have that can we Birmingham?! So come down to Church St on Sunday and let’s do our city proud.

Check out his website  or watch the documentary below for more infomation.

Teachers Meet up at Church St

From our Church Street Emporium

In my dark and distant pre-Urban past, I was a Primary School teacher in Devon. This meant a lovely seven hours teaching small children all sorts of exciting facts, but a hideous three hours each evening marking books, planning lessons and completing paperwork. It was boring, lonely and repetitive.

If you are a teacher, or know a teacher, this will sound familiar. To encourage myself to work, whenever possible I would take my laptop and books to a lovely independent coffee shop with a few other teachers and do everything there.

So, because we are a lovely independent coffee shop, we want to invite all teachers to come into Church Street on a Sunday afternoon from noon, take advantage of our free wifi and amazing coffee and do all your marking and planning to set you up for Monday morning.

We have free on-street parking, so you won’f have far to lug all the books and you can meet new people to chat with and maybe steal their worksheets.

If you would like us to send you out  a poster to stick on the staff room wall or anymore info contact jenny@urbancoffee.co.uk

August’s Book Club

From our Church Street Emporium

August’s Book Club book was the Orange Prize for Fiction winner The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht.  Having read one of the shortlisted novels a few months ago and enjoyed it, we were keen to see what the winner would be like!

Everyone found the book beautifully written with vivid descriptions, but the novel felt more like a collection of loosely connected short stories which didn’t always feel like they fit together. Some of the tales felt unfinished and unresolved, but the way they were written made up for it for most people.  The group felt they would’ve liked to know more about the region and the war that was referenced.  Overall everyone felt that they would recommend the book as a fantastic example of writing, but would have liked more of a coherent story.

Our next book will be Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre.  We’ll be meeting, as usual on the last Thursday of the month (29th September) at 6pm in the Church St branch.  All are welcome, even those that don’t finish the book!

Our Second Birthday

From our Church Street Emporium

Well it was certainly controversial for us to celebrate our 2nd Birthday during the riots going on in Birmingham, but due to advice from the West Midlands Police we went ahead and proved that those thugs couldn’t stop us from having a good time, in the true ‘blitz spirit’ style!!!

And we have to say we were amazed at the turnout and so proud of such a great community spirit that circulated throughout the night. Talk of us being like naughty kids who were grounded but had snuck out anyway was a regular theme and made the whole night seem even more special!

We had Vanessa Knight do a short percussion based set which was great and got everyone involved with various instruments (well, the brave ones/drunk ones anyway!) Whilst Frost & Snow  provided some fantastic cupcakes to share out amongst everyone that went very well with the free Pimms!!

Another massive shout out we would like to make is to our Urbanistas! They do an incredible job and we are lucky to have some very dedicated people. Peter & Cath our Emporium Managers deserve a massive well done also, for their leadership and hard work-we are extremely grateful to them.

So thanks to everyone that came, and everyone who wanted to be there in spirit-all you lovely people and all our lovely customers have been the reason we’ve made it 2 years, so here’s to a great 3rd one!!!

Live Music Friday

From our Church Street Emporium

Unless you have been on another planet or hiding under a rock, you should all know by now that the first Friday of every month here at Church St. brings a night of great live music! and last night was no exception as we held our sixth Live Music Friday of the year.

Once again it did not disappoint. And we had the pleasure of hosting a new local three piece acoustic / alternative / folk band called Stunts.

Playing two sets, they mixed well a range of their own original material with stripped down covers of well known songs which blended seamlessly. A particular highlight was their hauntingly beautiful cover of the Foo Fighters’ classic My Hero which captivated the audience and even got them asking for more!

You can read more about Stunts and hear some of there songs on my space >>> here!

If you were unfortunate enough to miss out on this months music, don’t worry because we will be doing all over again next month on Friday 2nd September!.

And as always we will have a great band and amazing drinks offers! so check your diaries, cross off anything that you may have planned and replace it with ‘Urban Coffee’s Live Music Friday’!

Saturday Mornings at Church St

From our Church Street Emporium

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and especially at the weekend. You have a bit more time to sit down, relax and take the weight off.

You’re rushed off your feet Monday to Friday, you’re lucky if you manage to grab a piece of toast as you leave the house in the morning, let alone sit down with a freshly brewed coffee and the morning’s paper.

We know how you feel. It’s the same for us at Church St.  Monday to Friday…. rush, rush, rush…. pastries in bags… coffee to go… barely a chance to look at the headlines let alone what’s on page 3 (we read The Guardian, so get those grubby little thoughts out of your head!) But, then comes Saturday.

That’s why we have brought in our Continental Breakfast. On Saturday between 10 and 12 you will be treated to a delight of pastries, fruit & cereal… orange juice, crumpets and coffee and all for £6.95, can’t say fairer than that can you! What’s more if you bring in your slippers and tweet a picture of yourself our lovely Alan who will be your hostess with the mostest on Saturday morning will give you your next coffee free.

Make the most of your weekend ladies and gentlemen, get a coffee, grab your brekkie and relax.

July’s Book Club…

From our Church Street Emporium

It was a hoppin’ time at July’s book club, as the group discussed the children’s classic Watership Down by Richard Adams.

Telling the tale of a group of human-like rabbits, possessing their own language and culture, who break away from their warren to go in search of a new place to call home after a warning from one of the group who can see into the future. Temptation and peril await, including threats from humans and other rabbits alike. Despite being a children’s book, Watership Down is quite a hefty read and, provided plenty to talk about.

The group was split on whether they enjoyed reading a fantasy novel about rabbits, with some finding the book difficult to get into and not managing to read much at all. Others found the dark, political undertones of the book similar to 1984 and really enjoyed it. One member had a picture book to accompany the film and found the portrayal of the rabbits’ culture in it much easier to understand than the novel.

Overall a mixed bag of thoughts on it, even from those that had previously read it.

August’s book is the Orange Prize for Fiction winner, The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht. We’ll be meeting on Thursday 25th August at 6pm in the Church St branch. All are welcome – even if you don’t finish the book. For more information, visit our Facebook page
